Link Culture: Coordinate Systems

Use the Coordinate Systems page to specify coordinate systems for both the source file and destination project. You can also convert from latitude/longitude.

Coordinate Parameters

Use these parameters to specify information about the coordinates contained within the linked layer. These parameters can also be used to perform optional coordinate conversion.

Convert From Latitude/Longitudes:If the linked layer contains data in latitudes and longitudes, turn on this flag to have the data converted to map coordinates. Latitude/Longitude layers will often appear as a small piece of culture in the upper left corner of the map after linking the layer. The default coordinate conversion information comes from the project's coordinate system. If this value has not been set it will use the Destination Coordinate System set in this dialog.

Source Coordinate System:This is the coordinate system of the linked culture layer. Select a coordinate system by clicking . By default this is set to the coordinate system in the project properties dialog. If the data in this linked layer is from a different coordinate system than that of your project (such as a neighboring UTM zone) you can set this value to automatically convert the layer to the project's coordinate system.

Note: If you do not have a coordinate system defined for the project this area will initially be blank. If you are not converting to latitude/longitude values, the coordinate system does not need to be set.

Destination Coordinate System: This is the destination coordinate system for the project. Select a coordinate system by clicking . By default this is set to the coordinate system in the project properties dialog. It is best to set this in the project properties rather than in this dialog.

Note: If you do not have a coordinate system defined for the project this area will initially be blank. If you are not converting to latitude/longitude values, the coordinate system does not need to be set however you need a destination coordinate system when converting latitude/longitude data. When converting between coordinate systems you need to set both the source and destination coordinate systems.
