Coordinate Conversion Utility
The Coordinate Conversion Utility allows you to:
- Manually convert the coordinates of a single point of data
- Convert the coordinates of multiple data points in a columnar ASCII file

A single data point may be converted from latitude/longitude to XY,
from XY to latitude/longitude, or from one coordinate system to
another coordinate system.
- Click
to select the source Coordinate System.
- Enter the coordinates in either latitude/longitude or XY. Note: You only need to specify the
latitude/longitude in decimal degrees or degrees, minutes and
seconds.
- To convert from latitude/longitude to XY click
. To convert from XY to latitude/longitude click
.
- To convert data to another coordinate system, click
and select the destination Coordinate System .
- Click
to convert from the source coordinate system to the destination coordinate system. The converted coordinates will populate the Destination Coordinates section.
General Information
Select Task
Select the coordinate conversion task you wish to perform.
- Convert
coordinates: Perform manual coordinate conversions. This is
the default page when the dialog is opened.
- Convert
columnar ASCII file: Perform coordinate conversions on a
columnar ASCII file. Selecting this item will change the information
displayed in this dialog.

Source Coordinates
Specify information about the source coordinates to convert.
Coordinate
System: This is the source coordinate system when converting
between two
coordinate systems. If you only want to convert latitude and longitude
values to x and y values you only need to define this coordinate
system. Select or define the coordinate system by clicking on the "..."
button. By default this is set to the coordinate system in the project properties
dialog if you have a project selected. If you are not currently in a
project the coordinate system will be blank.
Latitude (dd): Latitude for the conversion specified in decimal degrees. Note: You only need to specify the latitude in decimal degrees, or degrees, minutes and seconds.
Longitude (dd): Longitude for the conversion specified in decimal degrees. Note: You only need to specify the longitude in decimal degrees, or degrees, minutes and seconds.
Latitude (dms): Latitude for the conversion specified in degrees, minutes and seconds. Note: You only need to specify the latitude in decimal degrees, or degrees minutes and seconds.
Longitude (dms): Longitude for the conversion specified in degrees, minutes and seconds. Note: You only need to specify the longitude in decimal degrees, or degrees, minutes and seconds.
X:X location for the conversion (also known as easting). This will be specified in the surface units of the coordinate system.
Y:Y location for the conversion (also known as northing). This will be specified in the surface units of the coordinate system.
: Click on this button
to convert the latitude and longitude values on the left side of the
button to the x and y coordinates on the right side of the button. Note: You only need to specify the latitude and
longitude values in decimal degrees, or degrees, minutes and seconds.
: Click on this button
to convert the x and y coordinates on the right side of the button to
the latitude and longitude values on the left side of the button.
Calculate
Calculate:
Convert between coordinates in the source coordinate system and the
destination coordinate system. You only need to fill in one of the
source latitude and longitude or the source x and y. You can also
convert between the destination coordinate system and the source
coordinate system by entering latitude and longitude or x and y
information into the destination coordinate system and hitting this
button.
Destination Coordinates
Specify information about the destination coordinates to convert.
Coordinate System:This is the destination coordinate system when converting between two coordinate systems. If you only want to convert latitude and longitude values to x and y values you do not need to define this coordinate system. Select or define the coordinate system by clicking on the "..." button. By default this is set to the coordinate system in the project properties dialog if you have a project selected. If you are not currently in a project the coordinate system will be blank.
X: X location for the conversion (also known as easting). This will be specified in the surface units of the coordinate system.
