Horizon Smoothing/Attributes

The Horizon Smoothing/Attributes application allows you to run a smoother across a horizon or calculate any one of the selected attributes. There are various attributes that run a convolution matrix across the horizon to produce a result and only the appropriate parameters are allowed to be changed.

General Information

Horizons

Select the horizons you want included in the smoothing or attribute operation.  Left click to select a horizon, or left click and use the Ctrl key on your keyboard to select multiple horizons. To help you make your horizon selections, you can sort any column by left clicking on the column header, you can apply a filter (), or you can type a search string into the search bar to limit the list using Name, Type, or Owner information.

For additional selection and navigation options, including creating a copy of the horizon, right click on the Horizonslist to access the shortcut menu.

Lines

Select the lines you want included in the smoothing or attribute operation. Left click to select a seismic line, left click while pressing the Ctrl key on your keyboard to select multiple seismic lines, or select a group of lines from the Basemap. To help you make your line selections, you can sort any column by left clicking on the column header, you can apply a filter (), or you can type a search string into the search bar to limit the list using Name, or Owner information.

For additional selection and navigation options right click on the Lines list to access the shortcut menu.

Include SEG-P lines: Select this item to include SEG-P lines in the list.  Some interpreters will have horizons imported into their SEG-P lines. This allows computations to be performed on those lines.

Operation

Specify the operation to perform on the horizons. More than one operation may be selected, but each operation will produce a separate output.

Parameters

Grid Size Inline:  This specifies how many horizon picks to use in the inline direction.  A value of 3 means use one to the left and one to the right of the pick.  This should always be an odd number.

Grid Size Crossline: This specifies how many horizon picks to use in the crossline direction.  A value of 3 means use one to the left and one to the right of the pick.  This should always be an odd number. This is only meaningful for 3D horizons.

Apply inline versus crossline bin size correction: When checked, this item automatically calculates a correction factor based on the average inline versus crossline bin spacing of the 3D survey.

Polygons: Open the Select Polygons dialog and select inclusion or exclusion polygons to restrict the geographical extents of the smoothing or attribute operation. Only picks within the constrained zone will be smoothed, although values outside of the polygon constraints may be used to calculate the pick values.

Smoothing Parameters

Operate On:This option allows you to select what kind of data you want the "Operation" to work on. It is only available for Smoothing, Weighted Smoothing and Median Smoothing. The available selections are:

  • Null Values Only: Only the places that have no interpretation will be affected. This is great for filling gaps in interpretation.
  • Data Values Only: Only the places that have interpretation are affected. This is very useful for smoothing other small areas that are noisy.
  • All Values: All data is affected. Gaps are filled and interpretation is altered.

Fill holes: Use this option to only affect those areas that have no interpretation and there is an interpreted value above, below, to the left and to the right. This option is only available for Smoothing, Weighted Smoothing and Median Smoothing.

Expand edges: Use this option to only affect those areas that have no interpretation and has either an interpreted value above, or has an interpreted value below, or has an interpreted value to the left, or has an interpreted value to the right. This option is only available for Smoothing, Weighted Smoothing and Median Smoothing.

Expansion and fill distance:  When an area with no interpretation is encountered, this option allows you to constrain the number of traces to affect. The distance is used when you are filling holes or expanding the edges. This option is only available for Smoothing, Weighted Smoothing and Median Smoothing.

Apply

Clicking  will open the Select Output Horizon Names dialog.

Operation: A list of all of the operations that you selected in the main dialog.

Input Horizon: A a list of all input horizons that you selected from the main dialog. This is for your information, and cannot be edited.

Output Horizon:A list of names for the output horizons. By default a suffix ("SM", "DIP","GRD","AZM","EDGE","DIFF",or "LAP") will be attached, depending on the operation selected, to the name of each horizon to create the output horizon. You can type in a new name for each of the horizons, or select the name of an existing horizon from the drop down. If you wish you can even overwrite the original horizon. This is useful when you want to iteratively smooth a horizon.
